Morning commute

On Wednesday, the high was expected to be 61 and the weather guy promised sunshine all the way. So, the second commute of the spring-ish season began. My gear includes a bike trunk made by Giant, where I can fit my laptop, shoes, lunch, work clothes. I decided to shower after getting to work, so we needed to hit the road by 7:15 a.m.

We got a late start because we needed to pump air and add a few extra safety lights, the morning sun hadn't quite started coming out yet and it was a brisk 37 degrees. I had on three layers and a pair of those cold-weather running pants(w/reflectors), and of course, my favorite new accessory, SmartWool compression socks (see earlier post for context :-))

The ride in was exhilarating. When we crossed the Fremont Bridge, where there’s a daily bicycle counter, we were #501 and #502, sweet! We paused after getting on the West Lake Union sidewalk to grab this shot of the sun coming up over the Aurora bridge and Capitol Hill. Seeing that makes the cold, the hustle and bustle to get out of the house, all worthwhile. What a great way to start a busy work day. This time, I remembered my clear biker glasses so my eyes didn’t tear up when we rode down Fremont Ave. Pat on back! Door-to-door, the ride is 8 miles and about 35 minutes. With shower and applying my new Mac make-up routine, I was at my desk by 8:45, pretty eyeliner and all. Total mileage: 14. STP training plan for the week: 80.

Bee is a semi-faux bicyclist: during the warmer months she gets her %$#@ together for the 14-mile commute to work. But on average she only bikes about 10% annually (in her head it’s 50%). Her first commuting bike was a knock-off Trek. Her second commuter bike, the Newmar motor coach of bikes, is a Giant electric. She's going with a Cannondale road bike for the STP. Bee plans to get in STP survival mode with a combo of cycling, tennis, and running.

While V has tons of wonderful bike memories ranging from her second-hand Schwinn with the green banana seat to her beloved electric commuter bike, and loves that they've taken her everywhere from the mall to Belgium, she's never rode more than 20 miles at a time and is kind of terrified that she's signed up for 205+.
