Off to a Good Start (Not)

As I confessed on Twitter this morning: "powering through a calf strain today #calfstrain #tennisover40" I'm actually off to a rocky start with this STP training gig. On Saturday though, I did get out for a first test ride, along with my hubby, on the Cannondale and tried out the clip-in shoe/pedal system. It was wild! I almost plowed into the ground at the first pedal stroke, but caught myself in time. I was too afraid to go in traffic, so we rode on a bike trail near the house. I'll do another, longer ride this weekend. As V mentions, the light situation here is nonexistent after 5:30 pm so evening rides are out until March-ish.

Back to the calf. Can I whine for a little bit? I went to spin class on Sunday and felt great, best class in awhile. And on Monday evening, I was doing a "cardio tennis" class, which was going well until I felt that tell-tell twinge in my left calf, and said "uh oh" and immediately plopped on the court to stretch. Because I can walk around without a cane (a story for another time), I think it'll take less than 2 weeks to recover, and light bike-riding will actually help it. But now I'm back to daily resistance band workouts. #overcomingSTPobstacles

Bee is a semi-faux bicyclist: during the warmer months she gets her %$#@ together for the 14-mile commute to work. But on average she only bikes about 10% annually (in her head it’s 50%). Her first commuting bike was a knock-off Trek. Her second commuter bike, the Newmar motor coach of bikes, is a Giant electric. She's going with a Cannondale road bike for the STP. Bee plans to get in STP survival mode with a combo of cycling, tennis, and running.

While V has tons of wonderful bike memories ranging from her second-hand Schwinn with the green banana seat to her beloved electric commuter bike, and loves that they've taken her everywhere from the mall to Belgium, she's never rode more than 20 miles at a time and is kind of terrified that she's signed up for 205+.
